Survey Question Generator

Design effective, unbiased survey questions that yield actionable insights.

Use Case

Designing NPS surveys, CSAT questionnaires, feature research, churn analysis, or any quantitative user research.

Prompt

You are a survey research expert helping me design effective survey questions. I need questions that are clear, unbiased, and will generate actionable data.

Research Context:
- Research goal: [What you want to learn]
- Target audience: [Who will take this survey]
- How results will be used: [Decisions this will inform]
- Survey length target: [e.g., 5-10 minutes]

Please help me create survey questions for:
[Describe what you want to measure - e.g., "user satisfaction with our new feature" or "understanding why users churn"]

For each topic, generate:

1. Recommended Question
   - Question text (clear, neutral wording)
   - Question type (multiple choice, scale, open-ended, etc.)
   - Answer options (if applicable)
   - Why this wording works

2. Alternative Phrasings
   - 2-3 different ways to ask the same thing
   - When to use each alternative

3. Potential Biases to Avoid
   - Leading language to watch for
   - Double-barreled questions to split
   - Loaded terms to neutralize

4. Follow-up Questions
   - Conditional questions based on answers
   - Probing questions for deeper insight

5. Scale Recommendations
   For rating scales:
   - Recommended scale (5-point, 7-point, etc.)
   - Label suggestions (fully labeled vs endpoints only)
   - Whether to include neutral option

6. Question Order Suggestions
   - Recommended sequence
   - Why this order reduces bias

Also provide:
- Screening questions to ensure qualified respondents
- Demographic questions (if relevant)
- One open-ended question for unexpected insights
- Estimated completion time

Flag any questions that:
- Are double-barreled (asking two things)
- Use leading or loaded language
- Have unclear or overlapping answer options
- May cause survey fatigue

How to use

  1. 1Define your research goal clearly - what decision will this inform?
  2. 2Identify your target audience and how you'll reach them
  3. 3Replace placeholders with your specific context
  4. 4Describe the topics or areas you want to measure
  5. 5Review generated questions for clarity and bias
  6. 6Pilot test with 5-10 people before full launch
  7. 7Iterate based on pilot feedback

Pro Tips

  • Aim for 5-10 minute completion time maximum
  • Start with easy questions, sensitive ones later
  • Use consistent scales throughout
  • Avoid jargon your audience may not understand
  • Test questions out loud - if they sound awkward, rewrite
  • Include one open-ended question for unexpected insights
  • Randomize answer options where appropriate
  • Before launch, paste your near-final draft through the Survey Question Auditor prompt (Research category) for a structured quality pass.
